“If you throw a lucky man in to the sea, he will come up with a fish in his mouth”
The Arab proverb " If you throw a lucky man in to the sea, he will come up with a fish in his mouth” means that the lucky man is always lucky, even if he was in a dangerous situation. I will talk about wherre the proverb came from and the impact of luck in the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
The proverb came from an Arab fable. The fable talked about a man who was happy every day. When he was a little boy, he saved a little fish and a little bird. One day, the king was jealous of him because he was always happy. He didn’t like the man being happy every day. The king threw the man in to the sea, but he came up with a fish. The king threw the man from the high hill, but he was saved by an eagle. People thought he was a lucky man, even if you throw a lucky man in to the sea; he would come up with a fish in his mouth. This is the origin of this proverb.
Some people don’t believe in luck, others do. I believe in luck. If you believe in luck, the luck will follow you. If you don't believe in luck, it will be gone. But I think luck is based on other forces found in animals, or people. For example, Deborah Lacks whose mother’s (Henrietta lacks) cells contributed to medical field, is a lucky lady. Henrietta died when Deborah was a little child. She was lucky because her sister-in-law (Bobbette) gave her more important and good advice. When Deborah wanted to stop studying to marry some boy, Bobbette persuaded her to continue her schooling. Deborah tried to kill her ex-husband, but she was unsuccessful. Then Bobbette asked her not to do it like this. Deborah was lucky because she had a sister-in-law like a mother.
We can find that this proverb shows us the fish helps the lucky man. Why did the fish help the lucky man? Because when he was a little boy, he saved a little fish. If you help other men or animals, men or animals will help you, it is like thanksgiving. Bobbette helped Deborah because Deborah's brother loves Bobbette. If you love someone, he or she will love your sibling. The man of the proverb and Deborah has luck because they give first. From these two example, I believe luck is based on giving first, then animal or people will give you luck.
In my opinion, we need thanksgiving, helping other people or animals and loving them.
If you do, maybe you will become a lucky man. Luck is based on thanksgiving, help and love.

Question #2 Response
Question: One of Henrietta’s relatives said to Skloot, "If you pretty up how people spoke and change the things they said, that's dishonest "(page xiii). Throughout, Skloot is true to the dialect in which people spoke to her: the Lackses speak in a heavy Southern accent, and Lengauer and Hsu speak as non-native English speakers. What impact did the decision to maintain speech authenticity have on the story?
When the author called Henrietta’s husband (Day), he had a heavy southern accent. The author and Day didn't have a happy dialogue. Day asked the author to let Henrietta talk to her. In the beginning of their dialogue, the author didn't understand what Day said. That is the reason why the author couldn't visit the Lackses at first. If Day has native English accent, the author and Day’s speaking would become comfortable. Day will tell the author more Henrietta’s information.
They had different accents because they grew up in different areas and had different education. In early America, blacks were segregated by law. They couldn't get the high education. Henrietta and her relatives didn't have high education. They couldn't go to the white hospital. They couldn't have treatment in the hospital that only served white people. Henrietta needed the treatment and she have to agree with the hospital's requirements. The Lackses southern accents mean they didn't have higher education.
This book describes the cell. It belongs to medical field. Honesty is important to medical researchers. The author wrote the book about cell, so she needs honesty. Honesty could help her to write this book. It can attract the reader's attention. From different accents, we know the author visited many areas and collected many kinds of material and dialogue to help her to write this book. The author went to many areas and got into many troubles. The troubles didn't hold her back. Accents are small obstacles for the author.

“I have a dream” speech and English skill
Speech is important in our life. In the USA, we can see the president debate in the TV set,
broadcast and newspaper in English. Before the president debate, the president and his
competitor had more speech in many areas of US. They answered the people the question,
and told them what he does if he becomes president. Speech is important in our life. In this
country, we speak English skill. Good English skill can make a good speech that attracts someone.
Martin Luther King Jr. made a good speech for us in English. In 1963 Washington DC Martin
Luther King Jr. made a speech called “I have a dream”. The background was that bus owner
discriminate the black. The bus driver didn’t let the black-senior take the bus. Martin Luther King Jr.
know the happen about the senior. He made plans that call for the Black join his march. He told the
government and America people his dream that he need fair between in Black and White people.
He had good English skill. If he didn’t have good English skill, he can’t call many people to join his
march. The Black always stands down the white people. We need to tell people what we want.
In America, we use English.
The “I have a dream” speech is a good speech. There is lots vocabulary in the speech. If we
don’t have high level we can’t know Martin Luther King Jr. speech’s meaning. Therefore we don’t
know the advantage of him.
